Where to fish?
The UK contains some superb fly fishing locations - rivers and stillwaters - with the added benefit of the close proximity of these fishing waters to many of Britain’s best countryside and historic sites.
The UK’s fly fishing highlights are too numerous to list all of them on this website. Thus the summaries below focus mainly on the high quality Brown Trout and Grayling fly fishing of England and Wales although Rainbow Trout, Sea Trout and Atlantic Salmon are also mentioned where they are an attractive proposition for the fly fisher. They cover some of our personal favourite fly fishing locations and are intended to help you in your choice of ideal fishing location:
•near to London
•the English Chalkstreams
•the Yorkshire Dales
•the Cotswolds
•the Lake District
•the Derbyshire Peak District
•the East Midlands Reservoirs
•Wales (north, mid and south Wales)
The UK’s best fly fishing locations
England and Wales have some of the most famous fly fishing locations in the world, from the classic English chalk streams such as the River Test, River Itchen and River Kennet in the South of England to the superb River Wharfe, River Ure and River Aire in the Yorkshire Dales.
Near to London in Surrey and Hampshire and in many other parts of the UK there are excellent Trout lake fly fishing locations. These are an ideal place to take a break from the bustle of modern day life, to learn the art of fly fishing in a scenic peaceful countryside location and to catch some good sized Trout.
The spectacular Welsh Rivers Wye, Severn, Usk and Dee offer superb fly fishing as do the beautiful Lake District Rivers Eden and Eamont. The Derbyshire Peak District has it’s own place in angling history with Izaak Walton having fished on the River Dove and River Wye.
The Cotswolds offers the charming River Coln flowing through typically English countryside.
All our locations also provide excellent stillwater fly fishing from mountain tarns with wild brown trout to stocked lakes and reservoirs for brown and rainbow trout. For the grayling enthusiast most of the rivers we use hold a good head of often large grayling. The rivers in some locations provide an opportunity for the fly fisher to try for salmon, sea trout or Pike and more exotic species such as Shad or Char reside in the rivers and lakes in certain areas.
We believe our locations offer the very best in fly fishing in England and Wales.

Fly Fishing on the very special English Chalk Streams
Go Fly Fishing UK Ltd. provide top quality guided fly fishing days and fly fishing tuition days based on the world famous chalk stream rivers of the south of England.
We have our main south of England office in Hampshire mid-way between the chalk streams and London and we can provide excellent advice based on many years of first-hand experience of the waters, accommodations and other attractions of the area.
Click hereto see what our clients have to say about the quality of service that we provide on the chalk streams. »
The chalk streams River Test (pictured above), River Itchen, River Kennet and River Wylye, in the counties of Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire, comprise some of the most prized Trout fly fishing rivers in the world. They are set in some of the most picturesque countryside, water meadows, villages of thatched cottages and historic cities of England. Such famous fly fishing writers as Frederic Halford, G.E.M.Skues and Sir Edward Grey developed the sport to new heights here during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
As well as the River Test, River Itchen, River Kennet and River Wylye guided fly fishing days can also be arranged on other superb chalk streams such as the River Alre, River Lambourn, Wiltshire Avon and River Anton.
Most of the chalk streams are within an hours travel time from central London by car or train. If you wish to take a train from London we will arrange for our guide to collect you from a railway station near to the chosen fishing location. Your guide will also be able to provide you with instruction in the appropriate fly fishing techniques and, if required, fly casting tuition and loan of all the necessary fly fishing tackle, waders, flies, etc.
Cost
Fully guided days on the chalk streams start from as little as £170 (from £220 in the July to September season for a mid-week date and from £245 for a weekend date), with the cost depending on the date, the water being fished, the number of fishers and the season. The price includes the guide, the beat cost and if required tackle loan and local railway station or accommodation collection/return. Note that we do not add UK Value Added Tax onto our prices.
What to expect
The English chalkstreams are characterised by naturally filtered alkaline water of exceptional clarity and lush waterweed, creating an environment in which the Trout thrive and grow to large sizes. Grayling fishing is excellent and unusually for the UK they can be caught on a dry fly even in the winter. The clarity of the water means that both Trout and Grayling fishing often involves sight fishing for individual fish….creating real excitement and added interest to the fishing. The very best fishing is often in the shallower clearer upper reaches of the main chalkstream rivers and in the tributary streams. Some beats are best waded but others do not allow wading. Some beats are dry fly only until 1st July but some allow nymph right from the start of the season. The open seasons vary slightly from river to river. The Trout season starts on the River Kennet on 1st April but most River Test beats do not open until 1st May. May and June often provide the cream of the season's dry fly fishing with the autumn usually being almost as good. In early-October the Trout season ends and we switch to Grayling fly fishing until their season ends on 14th March. The River Test provides excellent Grayling fly fishing right through the winter.
Fly fishing techniques to learn
Many of our clients say that fishing the chalkstreams is difficult. We would say that its not difficult it is different. We can guide you to be successful with the main chalkstream fly fishing techniques which include - upstream dry fly, upstream nymph, New Zealand style - and the associated skills including river craft, stalking, observation, stealth, 'match the hatch', accurate delicate casting, drag avoidance and careful wading. A guided day out with one of our chalkstream experts will teach you lessons for life that will enable you to be much more effective with your fishing, to catch more fish and to enjoy yourself more.
Fly fishing tackle and flies
On chalkstream rivers the total flow of the river is often split across multiple smaller carrier streams. In the wider main river sections a 9 foot 5 or 6-weight rod would not be out of place but on the carrier streams and upper reaches of the rivers an 8 foot rod for a 4-weight line would be more suitable. An 8’ 6” rod for a 4 or 5-weight floating line is recognised by most fishers as being the perfect all-round chalkstream set-up.
We recommend that you use a knotless tapered leader of at least 9’ long. Tippet breaking strain should be from 3lb to 5lb depending on the size of fish that you are likely to encounter at the location and on the prevailing conditions. With overcast conditions a 4lb or 5lb 5X copolymer tippet should be fine but when fishing a small dry fly in bright conditions it may sometimes be necessary to drop down to a 3lb 6X fluorocarbon tippet to get takes. But often the size of the fish combined with weed beds mean that at least a 4lb tippet strength is required to minimise on the chances of a breakage.
Fly choice will depend on the season, on the prevailing weather conditions and on the location. On the chalk streams the main food items for the fish are, in order of importance, Gammarus freshwater shrimps, the nymphs and duns of the various species of mayflies, caddis nymphs and flies and terrestrial insects. Some chalk stream beat owners insist on upstream dry fly being used, especially in the April to June spring season, while others allow the use of nymphs throughout the season. Your Go Fly Fishing UK guide will always be able to loan you the best flies for your day but if you wish to tie flies or buy flies in advance of your trip then contact us and we will advise you on the flies that are likely to be the most important ones for your booked date/location.
To minimise on the chances of spooking the fish don’t wear anything too bright or white. Wear drab colours that will help you to blend in with the background. As well as polarised sunglasses some form of peaked or brimmed cap or hat will help you to keep the sun out of your eyes and thus help you to see the fish so as to target them more precisely.
Go Fly Fishing UK provide guided days, fly fishing tuition and short breaks based in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in the north of England.
We have our main north of England office in the heart of the Dales close to Skipton. Steve Rhodes, a Go Fly Fishing UK Director, has fished the Dales rivers and lakes for nearly 40 years and can provide second to none advice on the fishing, accommodations and other attractions of the area.
Click here to see what our customers have to say about our tuition and guiding service in the Yorkshire Dales. »
The limestone Rivers Wharfe (pictured above right) and Aire can be truly exceptional fly fishing rivers for trout and grayling and the Yorkshire Dales are blessed with many more excellent rivers such as the Ure, Ribble, Nidd and Swale. The Yorkshire Dales also has some superb stillwater fly fishing from stocked lakes and reservoirs to probably one the best wild brown trout fisheries in the UK (pictured above left). Many of these waters can also be fished from a boat.
The matchless beauty of the Dales countryside is a mix of landscapes - from the remote fells and moors, bare limestone scars, cliffs and gorges to the green hillsides and lush pastures of the Dales; from the unspoilt villages and historic market towns to the intricate pattern of dry stone walls.
The Yorkshire Dales are in easy reach of Manchester, Leeds and Bradford and a direct rail link from London to Skipton makes it easy to visit even from the south of England. Collection from Skipton station or Leeds/Bradford airport can be arranged.
Cost
A guided day or fly fishing lessons in the Yorkshire Dales starts from as little as £160 for one person.
What to expect
The Yorkshire Dales rivers are spate or what’s known in the US as freestone rivers and vary in level depending on the weather conditions, no two days are the same fishing on these rivers. Normally they are a series of runs, pools and glides and so offer a multitude of different types of water so demand many different fly fishing skills and methods. Much of the time the more "prospecting" style approach pays dividends, upstream dry or nymph, New Zealand style, spider fishing, high sticking and Czech nymphing are all techniques we use and can teach our customers. Learn the subtle techniques of line control, watercraft and method/fly selection.
Much of the "North Country" fly fishing traditions and techniques, particularly "spider" fishing were developed on the Yorkshire Dales rivers by past masters such as Pritt, Edmonds & Lee and Walbran to name but a few. Their writings rightly take their place in our angling lore and history. The flies and techniques they used are still used today to great effect and modern day masters such as Oliver Edwards continue to refine and develop the way we fly fish the Yorkshire Dales rivers.
Fly Fishing in the Cotswolds
Go Fly Fishing UK provide guided days and fly fishing tuition based on the very best Cotswolds fly fishing river – the limestone River Coln. We have access to private estate water on the most scenic part of this river.
We also run full and half-day private fly fishing lessons for beginners at a super lake Trout fly fishery in the Cotswolds situated between Swindon and Cirencester.
The Cotswolds is a picturesque area of limestone upland in southern England, less than 90 minutes travel time west from London. Its rivers have some similarities to the rich chalk streams of Hampshire and the River Coln (pictured above), provides notable dry fly and nymph fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout as well as holding a good head of sometimes-large Grayling. It flows through the most perfect peaceful ‘picture postcard’ English countryside and quaint Cotswolds villages.
Go Fly Fishing UK have considerable experience in offering guided days on the River Coln as well as fly fishing tuition days for beginners and improvers. As well as providing challenging interesting sport for proficient fly fishers it has also proved to be a very successful location for beginners to learn the art of fly fishing. We have access to the very best beats on the river - situated around 7 miles east of the ancient town of Cirencester.
If you fancy making your fly fishing day part of a short-break in the Cotswolds then we can advise you on the best accommodation options. These including manor house hotels, country hotels, inns and bed & breakfasts, each within walking distance of superb fishing.
Fish species / seasons
The game fish in the River Coln are wild and stocked Brown Trout, occasional escapee Rainbow Trout and wild Grayling. The Trout season runs from 1st April to 30th September with Grayling being in season from 16th June to 14th March. Thus the river is open for fly fishing for almost all of the year.
Tackle
The River Coln is mostly a fairly narrow river although there are some wider sections. An 8’ 6” rod for a 5-weight floating line is perfect for the wider sections although an 8 foot rod for a 4-weight line would be better for the narrower sections. Polarized sunglasses help considerably with fish spotting.
Tactics
The Coln is best fished by casting upstream from a position on the bank. Wading is not necessary. As with chalk streams stealth and observation combined with delicate accurate casts are the key to success. Dry fly fishing is very good from mid-April to late-June, during summer evenings and then again in the autumn. The River Coln has an excellent Danica Mayfly hatch which peaks in the late-May to mid-June period. In 2008 the hatch was very good and carried on into early-July. Nymph fishing is best in April and in the summer and autumn months and no matter how warm or bright the weather is the fishing is usually still very good to nymphs.
Guides
As well as providing a superb fly fishing guide service our guides will also loan all the required fly fishing tackle, waders, flies, etc. – or you can bring your own - and can provide a railway station collection/return service for fishers. This would be from Swindon station (almost exactly 60 minutes from London Paddington).
Costs
River Coln beat costs are very reasonable when compared to those of the chalk stream rivers Test and Itchen. Day rates, excluding guiding charges, are around £60 per person in the Trout season and £30 in the Grayling season (1st October onwards). Our guide charges start at just £140 for a mid-week day for one person in the autumn/winter (up to 14th March) with the total cost depending on the number of fishers, the season and the date. Note that we do not provide just day rod beat access to fish without a guide/instructor. Our lake based fly fishing lessons are priced as per our 'Costs' web page.
The English Lake District
The Lake District National Park offers some superb fly fishing opportunities amidst stunning mountain scenery. With good stocks of wild brown trout throughout the region, a wide choice of quality fishing is available, from the larger lakes such as Ullswater, Buttermere, Windermere and Coniston through to smaller mountain tarns and tumbling streams. These more remote waters offer the visiting angler a unique opportunity to really escape the crowds and enjoy fishing somewhere well off the beaten track.
There is also some excellent river fishing available, particularly in the north of the county on the River Eden where the trout and grayling fishing is world famous, in addition Cumbrian River Derwent holds some great specimen brown trout on both the main river and also its delightful upper tributary, the River Greta. Both the River Eden and River Derwent also have good runs of salmon and regularly appear in the top three salmon producing rivers in England and Wales.
In recent years many anglers have been testing their fly fishing skills against the mighty pike, and the Lake District offers some world class fly fishing for these superb sporting fish. Typical days involve targeting the fish from one of our boats and with pike to over twenty pounds being present in most waters there is an opportunity to put a serious bend in an angler’s rod. During the summer months we even get them on surface lures, which provides some heart stopping action.
Being close to the Yorkshire Dales means that it is easy to combine a day or two's fishing in the Lake District with a day or two in the Dales. A super combination for a short-break.
The Lake District is in easy reach of Manchester, Leeds and Bradford and a direct rail link from London to Penrith makes it easy to visit even from the south of England. Collection from Penrith station can be arranged.
Cost
A guided day or a full day of fly fishing tuition in the Lake District starts from as little as £160 for one person.
What to expect
The rivers in the Lake District offer some truly outstanding fly fishing opportunities, being spate or freestone rivers they lend themselves to a wide variety of different fly fishing methods and techniques which makes them ideal for learning or improving your river fly fishing skills.

The Derbyshire Peak District
The southern part of the Peak District National Park is known as the Derbyshire Dales. This is a limestone area and as such its main rivers – the Derbyshire Wye, Derwent and Dove – are fly rich waters delivering superb fly fishing. The Derbyshire Wye contains a particularly large head of fish. As well as Brown Trout and Grayling it is unique in the UK in having a large population of natural-breeding wild Rainbow Trout. The River Derwent flows down past Chatsworth House to join the River Wye at Rowsley.
In Derbyshire there are also some excellent stillwater Trout fly fisheries such as Carsington Water (between Ashbourne and Matlock), Yeaveley Estate lakes (near Ashbourne), Barlow lakes (near Chesterfield) and Press Manor Trout Fishery (near Chesterfield).
Go Fly Fishing UK offer guided fly fishing days and fly fishing tuition days at all the locations mentioned above.
In early-May 2010 Go Fly Fishing UK co-proprietor Dave Martin had two superb days fly fishing on the Derbyshire Wye at Bakewell and landed 30 wild Rainbow Trout, 4 wild Brown Trout (up to nearly 4lbs) and a few out-of-season Grayling. And in early-April 2009 he experienced two equally good days of sport landing a total of 16 Rainbows and 15 Brown Trout. He fished on the Haddon Estate water at Bakewell on three of these days and on the Cressbrook & Litton Flyfishers Club water on one day. Despite fly fishing for over 30 years Dave views these four days as some of the most enjoyable days fly fishing he has ever had. In 2010 Dave stayed at the excellent ‘The Haven’ bed & breakfast (www.visitbakewell.com). This is situated less than a five minute walk from the river and from the centre of Bakewell. ‘The Peacock’ at Rowsley (www.thepeacockatrowsley.com) is a very special place to stay and to eat and Go Fly Fishing UK clients staying at The Peacock can also be guided on the nearby River Derwent. Guided Grayling fishing days are available on the River Dove.
The area has strong connections to fishing history. Izaak Walton, author of "The Compleat Angler" (1653) lived at Shallowford, near Stone and you can visit his house there which is now a museum. The thatched, half-timbered cottage gives a fascinating insight into the history of angling and the life of a writer whose work remains ‘a unique celebration of the English countryside.’ Wander through the historic rose and herb garden or enjoy the heritage events which are held there regularly. Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton are also thought to have fished the River Dove and the river is mentioned in the "The Compleat Angler".
Other non-fishing information
The Peak District offers excellent walking in stunning countryside scenery and there are interesting towns to visit such as Bakewell, Matlock, Ashbourne and Buxton. As well as the magnificent Chatsworth House and gardens the area also boasts Haddon Hall and rose garden, set right on the banks of the River Wye. The major cities of Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Birmingham are all within easy traveling distance of the main Derbyshire fly fishing locations.
Accommodation in Derbyshire, ideal for fly fishers, varies from top-class country house hotels to friendly B & B’s and self-catering cottages. We can advise you of the best accommodation options to meet your wishes that are conveniently situated for your chosen fly fishing location.

Grayling Fly Fishing and Long Trotting
Go Fly Fishing UK have particular strengths in providing Grayling fishing days, guiding, tuition and short breaks. Both the directors of the company have been keen Grayling fishers for over 30 years. Steve Rhodes is Chairman of The Grayling Society (see below) and Dave Martin has been an active member for 14 years. Steve and Dave both have a lifetime of experience in fishing for grayling and are both Orvis Endorsed Guides. Steve guides for Grayling in Yorkshire and Dave on the chalkstreams of Hampshire, Berkshire and the Cotswolds. Steve is pictured above right with a 2lb plus Welsh River Wye Grayling caught on a Klinkhamer dry fly.
Many of the rivers we fish have excellent stocks of often large Grayling. In the Yorkshire Dales the rivers Wharfe, Ure and Ribble are classic grayling rivers as are the Southern chalk stream rivers Test, Itchen and Kennet together with the River Coln in the Cotswolds. The Welsh rivers Wye, Irfon, Severn, Dee and Taff also provide superb Grayling fishing and in the Lake District the River Eden and its tributary the River Eamont are excellent.
We can arrange guided Grayling fishing on all these rivers.
Cost
A full guided day of grayling fishing for one person costs from £170 to £200 depending on the water being fished and whether it is a midweek (lower price) or weekend (higher price) day. For groups of two or more fishers the cost per person is much lower. Call or email us for an exact quotation.
What to expect
Grayling offer great sporting opportunities for the river fisher. From late- August to mid-March they provide excellent fishing. As autumn moves into winter the fly fishing methods we use for Grayling change. On the freestone rivers in the north and west dry fly fishing becomes less effective and fishing heavily weighted nymphs and long trotting take over as the preferred methods. On the crystal clear chalk streams in the South of England it is still possible to catch Grayling with dry fly even through the very coldest winter weather. However even here the preferred method is sight fishing with a weighted nymph.
Grayling can be caught on all the standard river fly fishing techniques and the guides at Go Fly Fishing UK can teach you all of these together with the more specialised grayling techniques such as the "induced take", Czech nymph fishing and long trotting. Long trotting is a traditional method of fishing for Grayling using a float and a free-running centre pin reel with a worm or maggot as bait.
So just because the Trout season has ended don’t pack away your fly fishing tackle, give us a call or send an email and we’ll be happy to organise a superb Grayling fishing trip for you.
